Business leaders and entrepreneurs have been gathering here to discuss ideas and opportunities over breakfast.

Travel, Learning And Competitiveness
StrandRidge.com Your Online #CityCentre has been introducing a weekly business article for discussion on the various aspects of competitive leadership. The articles introduce business topics and tips with success stories that illustrate the message.

We should all travel more to broaden our horizons, learn and grow faster. An entrepreneur in London, England decided to wind down his business providing temporary staff when the local economy slowed down. He traveled to Thailand where he met his future wife.

Returning to England they started a very lucrative wholesale business importing costume jewellery from Thailand for sale to local traders who operated at the various street markets across England. This story illustrates competitive leadership where an entrepreneur was able to respond rapidly to economic changes by shifting from a business providing temporary staffing to one selling costume jewellery. Knowing when to cash out is as important as knowing when to cash in.

A 24/7 Online Promotion Pitch
Inspiring videos that captivate

We live in a world of information overload. With just a tap on a smart device the consumer is faced with an avalanche of information. In such an environment you may only have 10 seconds to engage, inspire and make your pitch.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video must be worth a million!

We all have memories of memorable moments from a favourite movie or TV series from our childhood. Equally interesting are the moments in our own life and work experiences. If only I had captured that moment! I would be showing you a video when as a kid I slipped, fell down a flight of stairs, landed on my feet and walked away cool as a cat with not a scratch.

To get the attention and capture the imagination of consumers repeatedly, re-tell the moments that inspire through videos.

Capture on a video, a customer’s description of the moment of that first sip of your coffee brew. The vivid description of the wonderful aroma and delightful taste could just inspire viewers to try your coffee. I enjoy an Italian coffee that wakes me up each morning. The aroma and first sip is truly a moment in paradise.

For a realtor, how about shooting a video of a client telling of how they felt the moment they stepped into the house they now own. The story of their journey of working and saving towards home ownership may inspire others to work towards becoming your next customer.

On Demand Video Advertising
Notice how we used to wait for that particular day and time to view a program on TV? Now, for more and more programs and movies, consumers have an option to view on demand at their convenience on the internet.

An advertisement that makes you want to pick up the phone and call now like those on the TV Shopping Channel can now be placed on a website for 24/7 viewing by consumers at a time of their choosing.

Information, Inspiration And Interest
An inspiring consumer experience story is very often the key to creating interest. Once the video gets the viewer’s attention, delivering information from a consumer perspective can be very effective in creating awareness and confidence in your brand.

Giving information in digestible bytes is key to retaining consumer attention. Always remember that there are many videos, photographs and articles on the internet and your video needs to be memorable enough to trigger action by consumers.

A consumer experience with your brand that inspires and makes viewers feel good can trigger the impulse to make that phone call to you. That is when closing a sale begins.

Ensuring Timely Delivery
Managing a supply chain

Jennifer a florist in North America worked diligently to cultivate a loyal customer base. She worked closely with wedding planners and stayed in touch with the families delivering her creations for their babies and over the years for their other family and business occasions. In her business, orchids fetched a premium price and there was strong demand for them.

Jennifer depended on local wholesalers for her supplies. They did not always have orchids in stock. One year she went on vacation to South East Asia enjoying the beautiful tropical beaches and the orchid gardens.

She spoke to an orchid grower who was well known locally for his range of exotic prize winning orchids. He expressed interest in exporting orchids to North America but had no clue as to how to go about it. Jennifer made enquiries with an internationally recognized courier company and found that they could provide all the assistance with regard to packing, customs and other regulatory clearance and transportation of the orchids to Jennifer’s company back home.

By relying on an established courier company Jennifer was able to help her supplier to organize an efficient supply chain that transformed Jennifer’s retail business into a wholesale business that supplied orchids to florist in nearby towns and cities. Jennifer was confident that her supplier could deliver sufficient quantities as she had assessed the orchid grower’s capacity and reliability through visits to his orchid farm and follow ups with testimonials from existing customers.

Managing the supply chain required constant monitoring and evaluation of all stakeholders including the supplier, transportation and warehousing companies, financiers and regulators. A risk assessment needs to be made with insurance costed in along with disaster management to ensure alternative supplies if necessary. For an international supply chain a political, economic, social and technology (PEST) analysis needs to be done to assess risk.

As part of her risk mitigation strategy Jennifer began negotiations with other orchid growers as well as with growers of other types of flowers. She also got active in the industry trade organization establishing relations with other wholesalers so that they could support each other in the event of disasters such as bad weather and pest infestations. Jennifer also made enquiries with suppliers of artificial flowers. Some of these artificial flowers looked so real that some customers expressed interest as they were cheaper.

An effective supply chain requires timely delivery by stakeholders including external and internal suppliers and service providers.

Working with a consultant Jennifer made sure a workflow chart and cheat sheets with timelines were drawn up and used by her staff with the necessary training and orientation organized.

In managing a supply chain, establishing a system and maintaining continual two way communications with all stakeholders is critical to being able to respond quickly to challenges.

Investing in understanding and improving your supply chain can help you to grow your business more rapidly.
